Sony Life Unauthorized Access Leaks Medicare Life Policy Data (About 385,000 Records): Names, Addresses, Policy Numbers and More, and What Policyholders and Insured Persons Should Do
Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd. and Medicare Life Insurance Co., Ltd. announced on October 28, 2026 that Sony Life's systems, including its policyholder-only site 'Customer WEB Service', had been accessed without authorization by a third party and customer information had leaked. According to Sony Life, the unauthorized access came to light on October 27, 2026. The leak confirmed is the names, birth dates, gender, addresses, phone numbers, policy numbers and contract details of policyholders and insured persons on Medicare Life policies that Sony Life handled as an insurance agent: about 385,000 records. My Number, credit card information and premium transfer account information are not included. Medicare Life says there was no leak of information on customers other than those who contracted through Sony Life. The cause and scope are under investigation; as of October 28 no misuse of the information had been confirmed, and Sony Life says it has notified the Financial Services Agency. Our conclusion: if you took out a Medicare Life policy through Sony Life, as policyholder or insured person, assume you may be affected, and check any message claiming to be from either company through the contact points on their official sites, not through links or numbers in the message.
