Unauthorized access to the Times Car website let a third party obtain data on about 6.6 million accounts, including names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, driver's license details and driver's license images. Credit card data was not leaked, and passwords were stored in a form that cannot be restored. This site's take: the weight of this incident is not the count but the identity-document images. Passwords and cards can be replaced; a license number, face photo and date of birth cannot, and they can be used to open accounts in someone else's name. Besides ignoring follow-on scam messages, register an identity-fraud alert with all three Japanese credit bureaus and check your own credit file periodically.
